Eric learned his version from Dave Van Ronk and Lightnin’ Hopkins. I loved the song, and adapted it to playing in the DADGAD tuning that I use for Irish music. After listening to Walter Davis, the pianist and singer who first did this song 1940, I was inspired to use some of his lyrics. My friends in Bangkok helped me nail a track that I have tried to do before, without ever getting it right. Bangkok is definitely one of my musical hotspots for inspiration!" - Bert Deivert

On Line Music Collaboration with Jamie Ruben

I just embarked on an online music project with Jamie Ruben here in Bangkok. Jamie's written and charted about ten or so of his original jazz tunes and we're in the planning stages of recording both traditionally as well as Web 2.0 collaboration.

After recently finishing some music events with Joe Cummings, (In addition to his writing for Lonely Planet, Joe's a solid guitarist). We brought in Eddie Baytos and Mason Ruffner, and with my regular drummer, Ponchai, put together some shows here in Bangkok. I also brought Joe in on the latest Keow Carabao project and after the recording sessions, we had the extreme honor of backing Keow in front of about 20k fans up in Kao Yai, Thailand. It was a great experience for all and well worth the labor. Keow invited Joe to do one of his cuts from last years Tonic Rays cd at the concert, and after a warm Thai response, Joe was last seen looking for a female replacement for the elusive "Marie Dance".

As for me, well Jamie's decided to go full 50/50 collaboration on these tunes. I have advised him about publishing so we're off and running...

I uploaded some very rough cuts of guitar and bass and would like to open the doors for collaboration.

We'll be adding some rhythms and pulling rough cuts from the rehearsals here.

Here's a link to the session hosted on Indaba Music:
http://www.indabamusic.com/sessions/johndooley/86722

Indaba Music is a great example of Web 2.0 at it's ultimate best. For a guy like me who's just upgraded to Protools, it's great to have an online pipeline to recording gigs as well as a platfrom to present my work.

I've started with a song called Clubtune 2034
Original Chart by Jamie Ruben

I recorded a bass track using my Protools workstation here in Thailand and uploaded in AIFF format. Next step is to get Jamie's first guitar track done.

The routine will be to record rough mixes in duet, (guitar and bass), upload as guide tracks, and then replace the guides with bass and guitar... And then we're off to Internet collaboration.

We're planning on running some studio time parallel to the Internet project and I'll upload some drum tracks as we go. (We're both devoted followers of human rhythm!)

I'll be proposing to Jamie that we donate any or all profit we generate from this little diddy to Kiva.

I think micro lending is the solution to poverty and organizations like Kiva will continue to grow through the downturn.

If you have any questions, comments, suggestions, or just want to collaborate, my door's always open.

John Dooley

M: +66 81 913 4301
F: +66 2 818 1465
E: jd@jdooley.com
W: www.johndooley.com

John Thomas Dooley is a Sole Proprietor established under the US-Thailand Treaty of Amity.
